About Dorothy Weichenthal

Dorothy Weichenthal Dorothy Weichenthal is a prolific oil painter and watercolorist, who began painting in the 1960's and has continued producing new works to this day, even into her early nineties. She has produced many hundreds of paintings, focusing on the rural scenes around her in the colorful and beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York State. She is a founding member of the Livingston Art Group and also founded a writer's group, which encourages all forms of the written word. She picked up bird carving as well, and learned from some of the best carvers in the area how to carve realistic birds, and paint them. Dorothy and her family have lived on a farm for over 60 years, (though, she did move to central Ohio for nearly two decades when her husband's work took them to Marion) so you will find a number of family members who are doing various farm-related activities in her paintings, as well as horses, cattle, dogs, cats, chickens and ducks. She likes to add life to almost every painting by adding birds, people, small or large animals, even butterflies and bees to her paintings. She began watercoloring when her husband retired and they began wintering in Florida. There is a definite shift in her color palette during this time from the earthen tones of the farm land in New York to the more tropical colors of Florida. As her children grew up and gave her grandchildren she also began putting them in her paintings, and some of the sweetest paintings are "kid themed" ones, such as a small child feeding ducks, or children playing at the beach. She enjoys meeting other artists and writers, and has encouraged those who thought they had no talent to develop their God-given gifts.

Her work has been displayed on a local TV station, in local newspapers, and has hung in several restaurants, libraries, church and art venues throughout Livingston County, NY. Her beloved husband of 61 years, Gary, who recently passed away, has been featured in many of her paintings.

Dorothy's enthusiasm for life is contagious. She speaks every week to all five of her children who are scattered around the country, is active with the Seniors in her town, her church, and still gets together groups of friends to play Euchre nearly every week. She is one of the coolest grandmothers ever, staying connected to friends and family through the internet and use of the computer.
